RBPD open house
The Redondo Beach Police Department is holding a community safety fair and open house at the Civic Center and police headquarters at PCH and Diamond St. from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6. On display will be SWAT, police dogs and motorcycles, fire equipment, plus safety and crime prevention displays; tours will be available. Free gun locks and child identity kits will also be on hand.
Dog costume contest
The RBPD is hosting its second annual dog costume contest on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at its headquarters on PCH and Diamond. The event will be open to the public.
Suggested donations of $10 per entry at the door will go toward raising awareness about the connection between animal abuse and domestic violence, and toward supporting the victims of domestic violence that the RBPD Domestic Violence Victims Advocacy Program services. The Program has been serving the community since 1996, offering support to victims of domestic violence and their families at the time of the incident and beyond. The Program is available 24/7 every day of the year.
Please note that all dogs must be kept on a leash (no retractable please) and be well socialized. Must show proof of current rabies vaccinations. Adoptable dogs will be available through The Love & Joy Foundation. For more information, call (310) 379-2477 x2336
Take the pledge

South Bay Galleria is teaming up with Nickelodeon star Daniella Monet to confront bullying through an awareness-raising event scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 5 from 1 to 3 p.m. As part of the national “Malls and Retailers Unite Against Bullying” campaign, the Galleria wants to spread the word that bullying causes serious social and emotional problems, including depression, low self-esteem, and anxiety.
“The bullying epidemic that our nation is facing affects us all,” says Mickey Marraffino, regional marketing director of South Bay Galleria. “As a leading shopping center in the South Bay, it is our responsibility to take action, helping the community to make positive changes that will benefit local children and families.”

Team Spirit Walk
Redondo Beach woman Kathie Austin, a breast cancer survivor of 10 years, will join over 1,200 people to participate in the Team Spirit Breast & Ovarian Cancer Walk (5K and 10K) on Oct. 5 in Long Beach. She is entering her 10th cancer-free year, and mentors other women struggling with cancer through the Women Guiding Women program at Todd Cancer Institute. Because of fundraisers like Team Spirit, Women Guiding Women and other programs – psychosocial oncology groups, social workers, oncology life coaches, and nurse navigators – are available free to all women at Torrance Memorial’s cancer unit.
“I am blessed with good health now because I walk in the footsteps of so many women who have participated in treatments and clinical trials along with their medical teams to root out causes and cures for breast cancer,” Kathie says. “I celebrate long survivorship and the progress being made to prevent cancer and look forward to ‘the cure.’” For more information, contact SGarrison@memorialcare.org.
Rocktoberfest at Rock & Brews
Rock & Brews will kick off Rocktoberfest – a rockin’ spin-off on Germany’s annual Oktoberfest – with Spaten beer, German-inspired cuisine (think Bavarian pretzels, Brauts, chicken schnitzel, and a Rocktoberfest pizza), pretzel eating and non-alcohol beer drinking contests, plus games and yodeling competitions at its Redondo Beach location from Oct. 3 to Oct. 27.
