Mickey Avalon and Dirt Nasty to play NYE at Saint Rocke

During my enrollment in the Southern California college culture of the mid 2000s, Mickey Avalon’s underground hits, “Jane Fonda,” “Mr. Right,” or “My Dick” (featuring Dirt Nasty and Andre Legacy) were all the rage, heard in dorm rooms, house parties, or bumped out of a heavily tinted late model foreign car. Mickey introduced us to Mickey’s world in his self titled album, “Mickey Avalon” which as he described as “a glam rap record about Hollywood’s seedy underbelly and the ugliness of my own life.”

Avalon’s music found its way into and was embraced by the surf scene. Surf and art lifestyle company RCVA promoted and produced many of Mickey’s concerts (sending him to Hawaii and Australia, two of his favorite places in the world) in the mid to late 2000s. He even found his way onto a few of the company’s ads.

“I connected with surfers early on and have a lot of surfer friends,” said Mickey. “I’d rather play the beach in a warm location for surfers then a cold place, like in the snow — though I’m not trying to bum out the snowboarders.”

In the ten years since Mickey broke onto the scene, his music has consistently transcended genres.

“We still have the fans who’ve been following us since day one. It’s kind of a trip when we have mothers and their daughters come to our shows,” he said. “I feel like a lot of 13-year-olds listen to us to be bad, like smoking weed and listening to Bob Marley, or taking acid and listening to classic rock.”

Mickey has played the South Bay off and on throughout the years, including at Saint Rocke, where he’ll bring in the New Year.

“I love the South Bay and would live there if I had the money,” he said. “I alway have a good time when I’m out there.”

New Year’s Eve, Mickey will be handling the stage with Dirt Nasty. Mickey just reconnected with his fellow rapper and they’ll be playing tracks off their new EP.

“One of dancers lives in the area that never goes on the road will be there,” Mickey said. “She’s got a fat ass and will be making super hot costume changes and stuff. It’s going to be a good show.”

Mickey and Dirt will be embarking on a cross country from January to March and will be dropping a new music video later this week.

“We just taking off from where we left off,” Mickey said.
