“Let’s not forget about the surfing, we had top surfers from mainland Mexico to Pismo Beach”

The festival committee, Scott Hubble Productions and LA County Lifeguards all had significant roles in making this the surfing event of the summer in the South Bay. Nine divisions, surfing two sites, a fun 3 foot swell on the south side of the Manhattan Pier on August 3rd, little or no wind with plenty of sunshine made this the place to be Saturday morning. Along with the US Body Surfing Championships on the north side of the pier, the scaffoldings, pop ups, vendors with plenty of free samples, banners, flags and terrific crowds gave the event the look and feel of a major surf happening
Let’s not forget about the surfing, we had top surfers from mainland Mexico to Pismo Beach. Two new divisions, Grom 12 and under, plus Stand up Paddle were really a hit. Both the men’s short and long board divisions were hotly contested with terrific surfing going on
South Bay Surf League standouts Codee Stamis and Luke Meyers tied for first after all tie breakers were exhausted. La Jolla’s Issac Woods was third with South Bay Board Rider and breakwater standout Matt Walls fourth.
Dave Schaefer showed once again why he is one of the best in the South Bay by winning the Longboard Division. Issac Woods was a close second.
Matt Determan finished third while Scotty Bredesen carried on the family tradition by finishing fourth. Spyder Surfs Tamera Lunz and Casper Elizaga from Venice put on a tremendous exhibition of women’s surfing with Lunz narrowly edging out Elizaga.
The highly anticipated SUP did not disappoint. Geo Perez from mainland Mexico put on quite a performance while Nicholas Huante was second and Tamera Lunz showed that the women will not be out done in this new event by placing third.
This years event indicates to me that if we continue to make the adjustments and improvements that were incorporated this year the surfing competition can once again be considered one of the can’t miss contests of the summer. DZ
