Local camping enthusiasts and nature lovers don’t have to travel far to find an authentic wildlife community. Redondo Beach’s Hopkins Wilderness Park, an 11-acre camping and study area, sits high upon the El Segundo Sand Hills and provides an apt getaway from an urban environment. With a wide spread of meadows, water streams and ponds housing turtles, crayfish and bullfrogs, Wilderness Park welcomes visitors as well as day and overnight campers (reservation required). The park is open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily except Wednesdays.
Kids ages 8 to 12 have the opportunity to explore nature by participating in the Wilderness Camp—weekly sessions from June 24 to August 16—which includes hands-on activities, games, crafts, fieldtrips and potlucks based on weekly themes including “Rocks Rock,” “Art of Nature” and “Rainforest Fun.”
