After taking a year off, Catalina Classic 2011 winner Brad Thomas, of Redondo Beach, reasserted himself at the 2013 Riviera Mexican Grill R-10 paddleboard race on June 1. The 72 paddlers enjoyed glassy conditions and warm water with a lingering west swell. Thomas’ time of 1:21 was just one minute faster than Canon Smith of Long Beach. 2012 Molokai stock champion Jack Bark won the stock division in 1:28.40 and two-time Catalina Classic winner Jeff Stoner, of Palos Verdes, won the prone 14-foot division in 1:29:37. Mike Caputo of Manhattan Beach took the SUP men’s class in 1:29:45, and Sarah Messina of Santa Monica won Mermaid SUP class in 1:40:50. DJ O’Brien, another Catalina Classic veteran, won the Mermaid stock class in 1:40:40 with Ruth Parish taking the Mermaid unlimited in 1:38:10. Sam Bark, of Palos Verdes won the Boy’s division in 1:43:45 and Jane Healey, of Palos Verdes Estates, led the Little Mermaid’s class with a time of 1:52:07. The competition’s youngest paddler Sarah Fairbrother, brought home some hardware by winning the surfboard division with a fast time of 10:00.
