Hermosa Beach About Town

Meeting rescheduled

The Hermosa Beach City Council will hold its only meeting in December next Tuesday. The council, which typically meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month, cancelled the meeting that would have taken place on Christmas Eve, and moved the meeting that would typically have taken place this week. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers.

Chief: Imbibe responsibly

Hermosa police are asking residents and visitors to drink responsibly during the holiday season, citing what is typically a seasonal increase in parties and alcohol consumption and warning that those arrested face potential jail time and fines in the thousands.

“Public intoxication and other illegal acts associated with it add to the city’s costs and reduce our ability to respond to emergencies,” McKinnon said in a statement. “We will be strictly enforcing the laws over the holidays, and we are taking this additional step of alerting individuals of the dire consequences of an arrest and conviction in the hope that they will celebrate responsibly.”

Although arrests for driving under the influence have declined with the rising popularity of ride-hailing services, they continue to form a sizeable share of bookings in Hermosa, along with public intoxication. And a recent study, looking at several metropolitan areas, found that the availability of ride-hailing services was correlated with an increase in binge drinking.
