Mira Costa girls advance to CIF golf championships

Bay League champion Mira Costa shot a 417 in the Eastern Team Regional golf tournament to earn the fourth and final playoff spot qualifying the team for the CIF team finals to be held Thursday, Nov. 3 at River Course at the Alisal in Solvang.

Sophomore Megan Kim shot a 6-over-par 78 to lead the Mustangs at the Seven Hills Golf Course in Hemet. Twin sisters Kari and Raquel Gordon shot 81 and 83, respectively, followed by sophomores Mike Pascual (87) and Jenny Johnson (88). Taylor St. Germain added an 89 for Mira Costa who edged Bay League adversary Peninsula (422) for the final playoff berth behind Palm Desert (381), Diamond Bar (392) and Vista Murrieta (395).

Coach Tim Kelley’s Mira Costa squad won the Bay League title with a 201-207 victory over Peninsula when Johnson and Raquel Gordon each shot a 3-over-par 39 and Kim shot a 40.

In the individual competition, Kim shot a birdie in a one-hole playoff to win the Bay League individual title after she finished tied with West’s Erin Choi with a score of 73.

Six Bay League golfers advanced to the Northern Division Individual Regionals at the River Ridge Golf Club in Oxnard on Monday where Redondo’s Robynn Ree tied for first place with a 5-under-par 67 before losing on the first playoff hole. The Bay League had a strong showing with five of six golfers advancing to the CIF Southern Section Individual Finals to be held Monday at Talega Country Club n San Clemente.

Kim had seven birdies to finish third with a 68, Choi shot a 79, while Peninsula’s Paige Fujihara (76) and South’s Michelle Yom (77) also advanced to the finals..
