Hermosa Beach news briefs: police chief search and sister city auction

Police chief search underway

City Manager Tom Bakaly said he hopes to find a permanent police chief before the holidays but the selection may take until January to complete. The city is accepting proposals from search firms through 5 p.m. today. Interim Police Chief Steve Johnson took over for Greg Savelli when he stepped down in January to head the parking enforcement division of the Los Angeles Department of Transportation.

Bakaly said internal and external candidates will be considered.

“We’re looking for a leader, someone who is collaborative with the community and who can also motivate and manage the department,” Bakaly said. “So I think someone with experience similar to this type of town is someone we’re looking for, someone who understands the need to cooperate with the community as well as the officers. They are really that bridge between the community and the officers.”

Auction for sister city association

The Hermosa Beach Sister City Association is hosting a live auction from noon through 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 1800 the Strand in order to benefit its Student Exchange Program. The program gives 7th and 8th graders from the Beach Cities the opportunity to spend their Spring Break in Loreto, Mexico with other 7th and 8th graders. Money raised will also benefit upgrading the medical services of Loreto, which is about 100 miles from the nearest emergency hospital. The auction is the association’s main source of funding. Tickets are ten dollars each and can be purchased at the door or online at hb-sistercity.org.

Surf movie classic

The surf movie “North Shore” will be screened outside the Spyder Surf Shop, 65 Pier Avenue, tonight at 7:30 p.m., with live music at 6 p.m.
