Mira Costa-Redondo girls soccer showdown ends in a draw

Mira Costa’s girls soccer team remained in first place but Redondo stays right on the heels of its rival after the two teams played to a 2-2 tie Tuesday at Mira Costa.

Kirby Benson’s goal in the 27th minute gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead but Redondo’s Megan Perkins scored twice in the second half to give the Sea Hawks the lead in a see-saw battle.

Shortly after falling behind, Mandy McKeegan scored the final goal of the game to preserve a tie for Mira Costa.

Nonie Frishette recorded four saves for the Mustangs while counterpart Sierra Kaufman posted five save for the Sea Hawks.

Mira Costa (14-2-3, 4-1-2) is the only Bay League team ranked in the CIF Southern Section polls, holding the No. 6 spot in Division 2. Redondo (11-4-2, 4-2-1) is tied for second with Peninsula (4-2-1 in league).

West (12-7-3, 3-3-1) moved into a fourth-place tie with Palos Verdes after defeating the Sea Kings 3-1 Tuesday.

The Mustangs had moved into first place Friday with a 1-0 double overtime over host West. Alyssa Llojo-Covarrubio scored with six minutes remaining in the second overtime period to lead the Mustangs.

Mira Costa hosts Leuzinger Friday before finishing the regular season with road games at Peninsula Tuesday and Palos Verdes Thursday, Feb. 7.

Redondo defeated Peninsula 3-1 Friday behind goals by Perkins, Anevay Heihle and Tana Granados.

The Sea Hawks host West Friday and Palos Verdes Tuesday and conclude the regular season with a road game at Leuzinger Thursday, Feb. 7

Boys Soccer

Redondo (13-6-4, 3-2-2) defeated visiting Mira Costa 3-1 Tuesday behind Colin Jackson’s two-goal performance. James Tanaka added a goal for the Sea Hawks in the win.

Frank Ralyea scored the lone goal for Mira Costa (6-8-2, 1-4-1).

On Friday, Redondo shutout visiting Peninsula 2-0 behind goals by Jackson and Shane Staudle.

The Sea Hawks play at West Friday and Palos Verdes Tuesday before concluding Bay League action on Thursday, Feb. 7 with a home game against Leuzinger.

Mira Costa suffered a 3-2 loss to visiting West in double overtime Friday. Brandon Tsuha and Sebastian Thomas scored goals for the Mustangs.

Mira Costa plays at Leuzinger Friday and hosts Peninsula Tuesday in 3 p.m. games before hosting Palos Verdes Thursday, Feb. 7 in a 6 p.m. contest.

Palos Verdes is the only Bay League team ranked in the CIF Southern Section. The Sea Kings hold the No. 4 spot in Division 1.

Boys and girls soccer games are scheduled for 3 p.m. unless otherwise noted.
