Redondo’s track team runs to national prominence at Arcadia Invitational

Distance runners from Redondo Union High School continued to put the Sea Hawks track and field team on the national map with stellar performances at the 46th annual Arcadia Invitational last Friday and Saturday.

For the last 12 years, the event has ranked first in the nation in the number of DyeStateElite marks recorded and has become the country’s largest prep activity run by a high school with the most schools participating.

Twenty five national records have been set at the Arcadia Invitational with 152 participants advancing to represent the United Stated in Olympic competition.

Redondo’s boys and girls distance medley relay teams each took first place while ranking among the nation’s best.

On Saturday, Redondo’s girls team of Cara Ulizio, Anevay Hiehle, Amber Gore and Kayla Ferron placed first with a time of 11 minutes, 51.82 seconds, improving on last year’s mark of 11:53.53.

The same team successfully defended their title in the 4×800 Invitational event on Friday, setting a nation-best mark of 9:09.74 according the DyStat.com.

The Sea Hawk team of Shelby Bassman, Hiehle, Erin South and Ferron set the third-fastest time in the nation in the sprint medley relay while capturing the event with a time of 4:02.76.

Gore, Ferron, South and Hiehle teamed to place second in the 4,400 Seeded race with a time of 3:52.81 and the Sea Hawk team of Shelby Bassman, Kristen Hamlin, Tairyn Montgomery and Anastasia Chiodo finished 4th in the 4×200 Seeded event and 6th in the 4×100 Open relay.

Ulizio also placed 10th in the 3,200 Seeded race with a time of 11:01.80 and the Sea Hawk’s Kira Bowen place 9th in the 100m hurdles at 17.90.

The Sea Hawk’s boys distance medley finished first with the second best time in the nation when Dustin Herold, Sergio Rodriguez, Waseem Radi and Evan Malone-White posted a time of 10:07.57. The team dramatically improved on its 2012 time of 10:28.24 when it finished 19th.

Herold, Radi, Nicolas Wells and Malone-White joined forces to place 4th in the 4×800 invitational relay with a time of 7:47.36.

Mira Costa’s girls team of Emma Lautenen, Alexis Johnson, Lauren Hagedorn and Abby Hong placed 7th in the 4×1600 Invitational relay with a mark of 20:55.06 while the Mustang’s Sarah Locke-Henderson finish 10th in the 3,200 meter race with a time of 11:01.80.

In boys pole vault competition, Mira Costa’s Reed Scale (15-5) and Sean Griffin 14-9 turned in DyeStat U.S. Top 100 Elite and State marks, respectively.
