The SEA Lab’s summer programs are designed to educate children of all ages about the world under the water. The lab, at 1021 N. Harbor Drive, Redondo Beach, is open Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. It’s designed to be a hands-on coastal science education center and has been in operation since 1974. All of the activities are operated by volunteers trained by the Los Angeles Conservation Corps. Along with having tours and touch tanks, the lab also hosts school field trips, birthday parties and special events. The lab’s summer camp is popular for their ‘Mini Mariners,’ from 4 – 6 years old as well as their ‘Ocean Explorers’ camp for 7 – 11 year olds. Both groups learn about sea life both at the lab from the aquariums as well as on the beach. The “Ocean Explorers” go kayaking as well as tide pooling. Sessions go from late July to mid-August and spaces fill up fast. They recently launched a new, “Fish Feeding Fridays,” program that offers visitors the opportunity to feed the lab’s fish, including sharks, rays, bass, crabs and lobsters. The program is from 1 – 3 p.m. each Friday and the cost is $7.
