On Wednesday, the Walking School Bus grinds into gear for the first time this school year.
More than 700 elementary students from 14 Beach Cities schools will be catching the Walking School Bus on the morning of Oct. 9. The Redondo Beach bus will be traveling the Lincoln Elementary route.
The bus is not actually a bus, but rather a group of students who walk to school together under the supervision of parents and volunteers. As the bus travels, it accumulates more passengers waiting at designated bus stops along its route.
The Walking School Bus program is entering its third year. Organized by the Beach Cities Health District, its aim is to combat childhood obesity and encourage physical fitness. Last school year alone, participating students walked a total of more than 11,000 miles, saved 15,000 car trips and burned more than 350,000 calories by using legpower instead of horsepower.
Wednesday’s Redondo Beach bus leaves from the intersection of Beland St. and Johnston St. at 7:45 a.m. and heads for Lincoln Elementary.
