Hermosa Beach’s Morgan Sliff notches 1,000 days straight of surfing

Peter Spennato, Jose Barahona, Ed Scale, Frank Paine, Boris Vishnevsky, Morgan Sliff, Christian Stuztman, Nina Dorsey and Jose Bacallao gather Monday morning in the parking lot on the south side of the Hermosa Pier Monday morning to celebrate Sliff’s 1,000th consecutive day of surfing. Sliff began her streak in the summer of 2015. She set a goal of surfing every day for a year, and gradually a crew of supporters rallied to her. Frank Paine created a new drawing every day to mark her progress, and hung it in the window of Brother’s Burritos on 11th Street, where Sliff and others often gathered in the morning for a post-surf meal. He created the extra-large sign seen in the picture to mark day 1000.

Monday morning dawned with cold onshore wind and sloppy, mixed-up waves. That did little to deter Sliff who, since beginning, has kept up the streak through injuries, storms, flat spells and even a trip to the Midwest, where she surfed on Lake Michigan. Sliff has no plans for the streak to end. Photo
