Budget study sessions
City officials will host the third and last budget study session Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Police/Fire Community Room. Residents have an opportunity to engage in determining how and where the city spends funds to benefit the community before City Council adopts the 2013-14 budget on June 4. This session will focus on three departments: community development, management services and finance.

South Bay Student Video Festival
For the 13th year, the South Bay Student Video Festival will showcase cinematic projects created by high school students Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the Mira Costa Auditorium. Work submitted to the festival was reviewed by a panel of judges including industry professionals and film school professors. Tickets are $5 at the door. Older Adult Health Fair
South Bay older adults, age 50 and over, are invited to attend the 35th annual Manhattan Beach Older Adult Health Fair at Joslyn Community Center on Friday from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The event is sponsored by Manhattan Beachβs Parks & Recreation Department, South Bay Family Health Care, the Kiwanis and Soroptimists of Manhattan Beach. Free medical services include screenings for acupuncture, anemia, blood pressure, body fat analysis, cholesterol and more. The Doppler test, which screens for strokes, will be provided for $20 and requires pre-registration at 310-802-6177 ext. 1112.

Marine Avenue Park ceremony
At 11:30 a.m. Saturday, a ceremony will reveal the new synthetic turf at the Marine Avenue Park soccer field. The American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) raised $845,000 to help realize the project, selling $82,000 in discount cards and cultivating private and corporate donations. Highland Avenue construction
Construction as part of the city’s water main replacement project will require a traffic detour on southbound Highland Avenue, beginning Thursday and ending Monday (Saturday and Sunday excluded). Traffic will be diverted to Manhattan Avenue from 11th Street to 5th Street, where cars will be redirected onto Highland Avenue.
