Police Memorial Ceremony, Police/Fire Open House

A memorial ceremony honoring three fallen MBPD officers – Officer Charles Frederick Grau, Officer Richard Timothy Giles and Officer Martin Lane Ganz – will take place Saturday at 10 a.m. in the public safety parking lot on 15th Street and Valley Drive.

Manhattan Beach’s Police and Fire Open House will immediate follow the ceremony, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Manhattan Beach Police/Fire Station. Visitors will meet members of the SWAT team, traffic officers, parking/animal control, K-9 team, firefighters and paramedics. Guided tours of the police jail and fire station are available throughout the day. Other highlights include demonstrations of firefighting.

Miracle of Living at the Beach

As part of Torrance Memorial’s “Miracle of Living at the Beach” lecture series, a free informational event “Heart Disease—The Silent Killer” will impart the latest information on cardiovascular disease Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Shade Hotel in Manhattan Beach. Cardiologists Mark Lurie, M.D. and J. Christopher Matchison, M.D. will discuss new drugs, treatments and procedures as well as prevention tips. For more info, call 310-517-4703.

Older Adult Health Fair

South Bay older adults, age 50 and over, are invited to attend the 35th annual Manhattan Beach Older Adult Health Fair at Joslyn Community Center on Friday, May 17, from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The event is sponsored by Manhattan Beach’s Parks & Recreation Department, South Bay Family Health Care, the Kiwanis and Soroptimists of Manhattan Beach. Free medical services include screenings for acupuncture, anemia, blood pressure, body fat analysis, cholesterol and more. The Doppler test, which screens for strokes, will be provided for $20 and requires pre-registration at 310-802-6177 ext. 1112.
