Denim Day in Redondo

As per Mayor Mike Gin’s declaration, Redondo Beach observed “Denim Day” Wednesday, April 24. Denim Day is an international movement in protest of erroneous and destructive attitudes about rape and sexual assault, with origins in an Italian court case in which a rapist was pardoned because his victim wore “tight jeans.” Now people all over the world wear jeans on Denim Day to raise awareness about rape and sexual assault. City Attorney Mike Webb pointed out at the time of the mayor’s declaration that victims “deserve support and assistance, not finger-pointing and blame.”

Grades of Green

Washington Elementary School got second place in a Grades of Green challenge to reduce trash at lunchtime. Grades of Green is a non-profit group dedicated to inspiring students to care for the environment and, in conjunction with Sanitation Districts of L.A. County, puts on the trash-free lunch challenge to encourage schools to reduce lunchtime waste and educate students about recycling and composting. Washington got $750 for its efforts, and Beryl Heights Elementary got an honorable mention.

Drug collection

Redondo Beach is participating in a national Drug Enforcement Agency campaign to “take back” unused, unwanted, and expired prescription drugs. It is an easy way to dispose of these potentially harmful substances.

Both prescription and over the counter drugs will be accepted. This program is free and anonymous, no questions asked. Redondo Beach will have two drop off sites – 320 Knob Hill and Site #2 and 1922 Artesia Blvd. Both sites will operate from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
