Barfly: Tee off at Cancer

Tee off at cancer: The 16th Annual Shea-Hurley Golf Classic takes place this Saturday, November 5 at The Lakes Golf Course, PCH, El Segundo. As always, it is a noon start because my Boston boys prefer to honor their friend Jim Hurley at a drinkers start. Shotgun/best ball in teams of approx five. Last year I had a friend in town from Tennessee. And this good ole’ boy had not ever been out of Tennessee. Needless to say I was concerned for honky tonk Mike but the Shea brothers dropped him in a team and he had the time of his life, (seriously, he told me it was one of the best days he’s had), so don’t be shy, come one, come all, (yes Habel, I said it). Carry Halloween over a few days and wear your costume – you just might win a prize! $75 per person or $350 for teams of five. If you just want to come laugh at everyone trying to manage a beer in each hand and a golf club, (did I mention there will be beer on the course?), pay a mere $25 for the 2-5 p.m. BBQ. Proceeds go to The City of Hope, The John Wayne Cancer Institute and other charities. For more info contact Tim Shea, 310.546.5257 or hurleyfoundation@aol.com; John Shea, 310.927.9675 or johnkshea@roadrunner.com. For the past five years I have served as the Barfly Beerfly, making sure everyone is well liquefied on the green. But alas, I am still in New York, (yes it snowed for 12 hours straight on October 29, don’t even ask what I’m thinking because clearly I’m not), but I am sure my replacements will keep your whistle wet. Have a great day and pour a little out for our friend Jim Hurley…

Keep It Going: Ortega 120, PCH, RB is running with the Halloween/Dia de los Muertos theme through this Sunday, November 6. Painted blood red walls dressed with traditional crucifixes and authentic Mexican catrinas and calavaras adds to the goth as this RB eatery celebrates its 4th annual Dia de los Muertos festivities. Special gourmet menu created by Executive Chef Thomas Ortega alongside award-winning mixologist Demi Stevens concocting her very own Marigold Margarita with Partida Reposado tequila, St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur, Fresh Lime Juice and Marigold flowers. Walk through the wooden doors and be greeted with a traditional sugar skull and continue through the resto to view new artwork in support of this coveted Mexican holiday. Lastly: I celebrate the Repeal of Prohibition Act on December 5 every year. Well, one of my loyal reader, Gus the Cork Dork, who helps run the weekly wine tastings at Second City Bistro in El Segundo reminded me that on October 28, 1919, Prohibition started, (well done USA), and told me in no uncertain terms, “Have a drink… NOW!” I responded, “Aside from the drink currently in my hand?” Remember I am three hours ahead of you guys now so Happy Hour comes that much quicker…

Speaking of Holidays: This column marks my 13th year in biz. A genuine heartfelt thank you to everyone who has been reading me all these years.
