Paddleboarding

The Hennessey’s Return to the Pier Paddleboard race celebrates its 8th year Friday, May 28. The 4-mile course begins at the Hermosa Beach Pier, goes north to the Manhattan pier and returns to the beach, south of the Hermosa pier. The $25 donation will help fund Team California’s trip to Hawaii for the International Paddleboard Championships in July. Baseball

After being rained out in February, the Redondo Union High School will hold its 7th Annual Baseball Game Saturday, June 5 beginning with the Home Run Derby contest at 9 a.m. where player will compete at $2 per swing. The top two hitters face off at 11 a.m., followed by the Alumni vs. Varsity game at 11:30 a.m. Admission is free to all students. Adults – $5 donation. Volleyball

The Amateur Athletic Union is hosting the AAU Los Angeles Open beach volleyball tournament Sunday at Dockweiler Beach in El Segundo. Volleyball Ventures hosts men’s and women’s doubles tournaments Saturday beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Manhattan Beach Pier. The event includes four levels of play (beginner to advanced) and is played in a round-robin format. Players can sign up individually, rotating players from their pool for each match. The Hermosa Beach 4-Person Coed Volleyball League is set to begin Tuesday. Games will be played north of the Hermosa Beach pier from 6-8 p.m. Format is best 2-out-of-3 each evening, then playoffs at the end of the season. Limit of 40 teams. Individuals must contact the league to be placed on a team for registration. Cost: $250 per team. Registration is available at the Hermosa Beach Community Center, 710 Pier Ave., ONLY. Patrick Sweeney, 31, of Manhattan Beach won the Palos Verdes Marathon Saturday with a time of 2 hours, 37 minutes, 14 seconds, defeating runner-up Trinidad Robles, of Placentia, by more than 11 minutes. Torrance resident Naoki Kato finished third at 2:50.19. Rachel Ragona, of Redondo Beach, placed third in the women’s division with a time of 3:26.42.

The 9th Annual Manhattan Beach 5K Summer Solstice race is scheduled for Saturday, May 29 beginning at 8 a.m. at the Manhattan Beach Pier. Entry fee $25. Kids’ races $20. The Redondo Union High School Athletic Association and the Redondo Union High School Alumni Association will hold the “Striff/Seifert Memorial Track Meet” on Saturday, June 5 at 12 p.m. Admission is free. AdventurePlex, 1701 Marine Street in Manhattan Beach, is hosting Open Ropes on Saturdays from noon-3 p.m. for kids and adults ages 8 and up. Participants will bond while solving problems and overcoming obstacles. Groups of seven start every hour and will take approximately 45 minutes to complete the course. Advance registration is recommended. Cost is $20.

The Redondo High girls basketball program will be holding its South Bay Ball-handling Clinic for girls in grades 5-8 Saturday from 2-4 p.m. at the high school gym. Dave Miller, former NBA/NCAA basketball coach will host his MVP Summer Basketball Camps July 12-16 and Aug. 2-6. Open to boys and girls ages 5-14, each camp runs from 9 a.m. -3 p.m. daily in the state of art NBA training facility at the Spectrum Athletic Club South Bay. The camp focuses on fundamentals including offensive and defensive drills, sportsmanship and positive values that produce life skills on and off the court.
