Basketball

The Hermosa Beach Youth Basketball League holds sign-ups Saturday and Sunday in Room 7 of the Community Center, 710 Pier Ave., Hermosa Beach. Celebrating its 30th season, the league is open to boys and girls in kindergarten through 10th grades. Fees are: $115 for first player; $100 for second; $90 for third. Young athletes are invited to attend a unique spiritual and educational event, “The Blessing of the Athletes,” on Sunday at Riviera United Methodist Church, 375 Palos Verdes Blvd., Redondo Beach.  The day begins with a blessing ceremony at 10 a.m., in which young athletes can wear their team or individual sports uniforms and receive special words of encouragement. Les Congelliere, retired athletic director from Redondo Union High School, will speak on the topic of “Sports and Spirituality.” The evening session, beginning at 6:15 p.m., includes a panel of distinguished speakers — from both professional athletic and medical fields — who will discuss injury prevention, sports nutrition, coaching and team work. Volleyball

Tryouts for Surfside Volleyball Club will be held Friday, Oct. 1, at Del Aire gym, 12601 Isis Ave., Hawthorne, for ages 10-12 and Saturday, Oct. 2, at Manhattan Beach Middle School, 1501 Redondo Ave., Manhattan Beach, for 13 and 14-year-olds. Tryout fees are $30 and a parent must accompany all girls to sign liability form and attend informational meeting. Football

El Camino College will play Harbor College for the first time since 1988 when the Warriors travel to take on the Seahawks Saturday at 6 p.m.

The Prank Monkey coed flag football on the beach tournament is back for its annual random draw event on Saturday, Oct. 23, at 10th Street and The Strand in Hermosa Beach. Individuals are welcome and no experience is necessary. All teams will be picked at random, playing a minimum of two games. The cost of the tournament is $25 per person. Pre-registration available at the Hermosa Beach Community Center, 710 Pier Ave., Hermosa Beach. To ensure even teams, please sign up with an opposite sex co-entry. The Smackbowl Men’s and Women’s Flag Football Tournament on the Beach returns Saturday, Nov. 13, at 10th and The Strand in Hermosa Beach. Teams created in advance by captains, 5-on-5 (maximum of 10 players per team), begin play promptly at 10:30 a.m. The cost of the tournament is $160 per team via pre-registration only at the Hermosa Beach Community Center, 710 Pier Ave., Hermosa Beach, or online at www.hermosabch.org. Triathlon

The Day at the Beach Triathlon in Hermosa Beach is Sunday, Oct. 10, beginning at 7 a.m. Starting with a ?-mile ocean swim, the race is followed by a 10-mile bike course, then completed with a 3-mile out-and-back run on The Strand.
