A 54-year-old man who was a fixture among the local homeless was found unconscious in a public restroom at the base of the city pier about 3:30 p.m. Monday, and was pronounced dead after resuscitation efforts failed. The man’s name was withheld pending notification of his relatives. There were no signs of foul play.
The man was found by a passerby in an unlocked one-person room in the bathroom building, Hermosa Beach Police Detective Mick Gaglia said.
“The citizen contacted lifeguards who ultimately contacted the Hermosa Beach Police and Fire departments. The Fire Department pronounced the male deceased at the scene after life saving measures were unsuccessful,” Gaglia said.
“No signs of foul play were observed by detectives, and the Los Angeles County coroner was contacted to recover the body.”
Shortly after the discovery, police put up canvass tenting around the body as it lied on the pavement outside the bathroom building, where a deputy coroner would make a preliminary examination.
Police urged anyone with information regarding details of the man’s death to contact Gaglia at (310) 318-0348. ER
