Basketball: Six young free throw shooters from Redondo Beach advanced to the Elks Hoop Shoot District Championship to be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at North Torrance High School. Representing Beryl Heights Elementary School will be Jonah Mirkovich and Meredith Lowenstein who won the boys and girls 8-9 year-old division, respectively. Mirkovich also won the second annual OSD Medallion hitting 19 of 25 free throws in the first round of competition held Dec. 12 at Redondo Union High School.
Ty Soria (Beryl Heights) and Vivian Reha (Parras Middle School) advanced in the 10-11 age group while Allen Garcia and Josette Lewis, both from Parras Middle School, will compete in the 12-13 division. Garcia, who won the State Championship two years ago, made 22 of 25 free throws to qualify for the District Championships.
The California South Central Coast Championship will be held Jan. 30 at the Toyota Center in el Segundo, followed by the Regionals in Las Vegas (date to be determined) and the National Championships in Chicago on April 16.
Baseball: Registration is available for the Sea Hawk Elite Winter Baseball Camp to be held from 9 a.m. – 1 pm. Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 16-17, 2016 at Alta Vista Park. Open to players grade 1-8, the camp teaches fundamental skill developments focused on preparing players for the next level. The camp is run by Redondo Union High School head coach Jeff Baumback and his coaching staff along with former professional player and current scout with the Texas Rangers, Todd Guggiana. Running: Registration is available for the 38th annual Redondo Beach Super Bowl Sunday 10K/5K Run/Walk presented by Kaiser Permanente to be held Sunday, Feb. 7. More than 8,000 race enthusiasts will congregate at Seaside Lagoon for the 10K, 5K and 10K baby buggy races and popular costume contest presented by the King Harbor Association. Registration is open for the 13th Annual Village Runner St. Patrick’s Day 5K Run and Community Walk to be held at 8 a.m. Sunday, Mar. 13 in Redondo Beach’s Riviera Village. Following the 5K at 9:30 a.m., the next generation of runners will compete in the kid’s Chase Stecyk Leprechaun Dash for Gold. All participants receive a T-shirt and cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers. The event begins with a two-day Health and Fitness Expo on Saturday, Mar. 12.
