Grom-O-Rama on the beach at 22nd Street in Hermosa Beach last Saturday, August 10, was like Scout-O-Rama, except with swim suits and sun screen instead of khakis and bug repellent.

Like the Scouts, its purpose is to introduce kids to the great outdoors with physical challenges like flags and obstacle course races. Only the flags were tennis balls bobbing in the surf and the obstacle course hurdles were surfboards.

At the end of the day, instead of merit badges, the kids were awarded trophies in the shape of surfboards, handcrafted by woodworker Pat Lennon.

The top scoring King and Queen of the Day were Curren Gentry and Pippa Anderson. Dylan Derricks was recognized for Most Inspirational.

Grom-O-Rama is hosted every August by The South Bay Boardriders who, like The Scouts, are volunteer moms and dads. For more about the South Bay Boardriders, visit SouthBayBoardriders.org. ER
