Hermosa Beach About Town

National Night Out

Hermosa Beach celebrates National Night Out next week with a screening of “Home” in Valley Park. The event begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7 with games, prizes, and demonstrations from the Hermosa Beach Police Department’s K-9 units. The HBPD is hosting the event, and officers will be present throughout. “Home,” a Dreamworks animated film starring Rihanna, will begin about 8:15 p.m., and end at about 10 p.m.

National Night Out is affiliated with National Association of Town Watch, a volunteer policing organization founded in the early 1980s. The first Night Out, in 1984, brought together neighborhood watch groups, police departments, and other civic organizations, and encouraged people to sit on their front porch with their lights on in a show of solidarity against crime and drugs. The event is now held annually on the first Tuesday in August and has evolved to include an estimated 38 million people in 16,000 cities and towns across the country, according to the National Association of Town Watch.

Assemblyman office hours

Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi will host his mobile “office hours” in Hermosa Beach next week. Muratsuchi will be in the second-floor conference room of Hermosa’s City Hall on Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m.

SEED Awards

South Bay residents, businesses, and nonprofits have until Sunday to apply for a SEED Award, short for Southern (California) Environmental Excellence Development. The awards are offered by the South Bay Business Environmental Coalition and will be distributed in September. The award is sponsored by the Los Angeles Regional Agency, South Bay Gardens, Waste Management, Athens Services and Republic Services. Past winners include Torrance Refinery Action Alliance, Grades of Green, and Hermosa’s Green Idea House.
