Traffic fixes eyed for North

A walking path through Valley Park, converting streets to one-way, and reconfiguring parking lots were among the possibilities aired Monday night by parents and residents at a meeting devoted to addressing traffic impacts associated with the reopening of North School. The meeting was the result of an agreement struck between the city and the Hermosa Beach City School District earlier this year, which sought to incorporate input from residents in the surrounding neighborhood. A draft of the plan will be released in January, then, after another meeting, finalized in March.

Construction at the campus began earlier this month, and is expected to be completed in December of next year. In January 2021, North will open as a “swing campus,” to accommodate students displaced by construction at Hermosa View, which will be reconstructed with funds from Measure S, the school facilities bond passed in 2016 that is also financing the rebuilding of North. According to figures provided by the district, North will host 402 students in the 2020-21 school year, then 411 in the 2021-22 school year. The following year, the first in which it will serve its intended population of third- and fourth-graders, enrollment is forecasted to be 269. The 2022-23 school year will also see the district return to an all-day kindergarten schedule.
