Hermosa Beach About Town

Cypress walking tour

The Planning Commission will hold a special meeting Thursday to explore possible zoning changes to Hermosa’s light manufacturing district. The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a walking tour beginning at the corner of 6th Street and Cypress Avenue, followed at 7 p.m. by a commission discussion in council chambers.

City Council members asked the commission to fast-track their look at zoning changes in the area earlier this year. Cypress and surrounding streets have historically been home to Hermosa’s surfboard manufacturing industry, as well as recording studios, auto body shops, cabinetry workshops, and other light-industry. The Horsepower Crossfit Gym opened on Cypress in 2014, but was forced to close after a contentious public nuisance proceeding last year. In 2017 two art galleries opened on the street. The galleries drew people to well-attended openings, but the events later resulted in citations for operating without proper permits.

Among the zoning changes that commissioners will consider for the area are how to accommodate events such as show openings. The commission will also examine possible expansion of retail opportunities for businesses located in the area, which have historically been limited.
