Hermosa Beach news briefs

Power Down

More than 4,800 customers went without power in Hermosa Beach Sunday. Power went out at 4:05 a.m. when a wire went down at 8th Street and Palm Drive, said Southern California Edison Spokesman Darryl Ryan.

Many businesses lost Father’s Day revenue as a result. Scotty’s on the Strand restaurant didn’t open all day. Server Alisa Rupert said she planned to make between $130 and $180. Hot’s Kitchen didn’t open until 6 p.m., and Silvio’s Brazilian Barbeque opened in the afternoon instead of 9 a.m. as planned. “Father’s Day is one of the biggest days,” said T.J. Kowalczyk, one of the owners of Silvio’s.

Ryan said there were two areas affected by two circuit outages. The first was bordered by 21st Street to the north, 2nd Street to the south, Hermosa Avenue to the west and Prospect Avenue to the east. This area encompassed 1,100 customers and was power restored 30 seconds after losing it, Ryan said.

The second area, bordered by 28th Street to the north, Anita Street to the south, the Strand to the west and Flagler Lane in Redondo Beach to the east. Power was restored to the second area of 3,600 customers at 3:58, Ryan said.

Police Chase

Hermosa Beach police arrested a man who tried to flee in a stolen car but ended up crashing into a home and cars in the driveway.

Police arrested Phillip Landry Rivera after he tried to escape on foot after crashing into a home on Ocean Drive, south of 8th Place, just after 7 a.m. Monday.

Rivera, 34, was on parole for receiving stolen property, police said. He was charged with hit and run, leaving the scene of an accident, evading the police, resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance and possession of ammunition as a felon. Rivera had two warrants for his arrest, police said.

Rivera was driving a silver Honda Accord with paper license plates when a Hermosa Beach police officer attempted to pull him over near Aviation Boulevard and Ocean Drive. Rivera made several turns to avoid stopping and then fled at high speed south on Ocean Drive, said Detective Mick Gaglia.

Rivera did not stop at traffic signals and posted signs and collided with a female driver at 8th Place. He crashed into a single family home and was caught by officers when attempted to run away, police said.

Gaglia said the damages totaled “well into the thousands,” including four vehicles and a house.
