In 1990, long time Hermosa Beach 16th street resident Ed Kushins invited friends and neighbors to go for a swim on New Years’s Day. Swimmers were rewarded with hot chocolate. Over the years, Kushins added muffins, then bagels, then bagels and lox, then mimosas and then wife Terry’s famous egg and caviar torte to the post swim feast. As the food improved, the numbers grew. This year over two dozen people raced in and out of the ocean in front of the 16th Street lifeguard tower, and then raced up to the Kushins  front yard feast. Hot chocolate remains everyone’s favorite.
