Officials have announced a “sweep” of sidewalks in commercial zones to clear away outdoor signs, furniture and merchandise that are not authorized by city permits.
“Our beautiful, pedestrian-friendly downtown is a major attraction for visitors and residents who wish to shop, eat and enjoy our outstanding retail establishments, restaurants and entertainment venues,” said Mayor Peter Tucker.
“By working with local business owners to remove unauthorized items that can block access to businesses, we can protect the beauty of our downtown and enhance the experience of those who visit our local stores and restaurants,” he said.
The “Hermosa Clean Sweep” campaign, which will begin June 1, is aimed at clearing away clutter and easing pedestrian access to the sidewalks. Officials said business owners can seek permits for sidewalk items that are not already authorized.
Businesspeople with non-permitted items after June 1 will receive a warning, and if the items are not removed, the city will impound the items. Hermosa municipal codes bar items such as furniture, merchandise and signs on the public right-of-way without conditional use permits or encroachment permits. ER
