Hermosa Beach beefing up police presence downtown

Hermosa Beach is stepping up its patrols downtown for the second weekend in a row and plans to continue a more visible law enforcement presence for at least the next three weekends, said City Manager Tom Bakaly.

The city is partnering with outside agencies, including the Redondo Beach Police Department, which provided officers Friday night. On Saturday night and Sunday, the county-wide L.A. Impact crime task force is providing officers, Bakaly said.

“We’re going to be doing this on an ongoing basis, using these regional partners for at least the next three weeks,” Bakaly said.

Earlier this week, the city council approved $20,000 to provide outside law enforcement personnel after a rash of serious late night crimes on the weekends this summer, including a fight on the plaza Sept. 2 that left two men stabbed.

Hermosa Beach has 6 to 7 officers on duty throughout the weekend, about double its usual size. Throughout Friday night, several police cruisers were seen patrolling Hermosa and Pier avenues.
