Rugby: Former Mira Costa rugby standout Justin Johnson won his second consecutive College Rugby National Championship as flanker and defensive captain of the Life University Running Eagles who defeated the Califor­nia Bears 29-26. Johnson has also been named to the Junior Falcons which are part of the United States national rugby team.

 

Baseball: Beach City Baseball Academy will be holding Fall Prospect Tryouts on Sundays May 19 and June 2 and Saturday, June 15. ECC Hall of Fame: The 29th El Camino College Athletic Hall of Fame induction dinner ceremony will take place on Thursday, May 23 in the school’s new gymnasium. Golf: The 31st annual El Camino College Warrior Athletics Golf Classic presented by Lendlease will take place Monday, June 10 at 1 p.m. at Los Verdes Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes. Paddling: Registration has opened for the 41st Catalina Classic Paddleboard Race, to be held Sunday, Aug. 25. The first Catalina Classic was held in 1955, and is prone paddling’s oldest, most celebrated race. The 32-mile race begins at Two Harbors on Catalina Island and finishes at the Manhattan Beach Pier. Entries are limited and paddlers who completed the race last year are given priority. Paddlers who did not complete the race last year may qualify by competing in one of four preceding races: The South Bay Paddle in Hermosa Beach on June 8; the Jay Race in Santa Cruz (date to be announced); the Rock2Rock from Two Harbors to Cabrillo Beach on June 30; and The Waterman’s Challenge in La Jolla on July 13. Paddleboarding: Registration is open for the Rock 2 Rock paddleboard race to be held on June 30. Starting from Two Harbors on Catalina Island and finishing at Cabrillo State Beach in San Pedro, the race was started by Joe Bark and is now a fundraiser for the Ocean of Hope Campaign. Push Up Challenge: GI Joe Charles’ $1,000 Push Up Challenge will take place at the 26th annual Village Runner 4th of July 5k Run on Thursday, July 4 from 9-11 a.m. Early sign-ups are $10 (increases to $20 on May 31) and can be made at MBbootcamp.com.

 

Swimming: Registration is now open for Swim The Avenues, an official qualifying swim for the Manhattan Beach Pier to Pier Swim, to be held Sunday, July 14 at Redondo Beach’s Miramar Park. There will be a 1-mile race for ages 13-and-over ($45) as well as a half-mile race ($35). Both include individual age group and open categories along with wetsuit and non-wetsuit categories. Basketball: Dave Miller, Emmy Award winning NBA analyst will be hosting his 22nd annual  MVPCAMP.COM summer basketball camps at Aviation Sports Complex in Redondo Beach. Session I will be held July 8-12 (coed) and Session II July 15-19 (girls only) and Session III July 29-Aug. 2 (coed). Camps run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and are open to boys and girls ages 5 to 14. The camp is geared for all levels of play and places an emphasis on keeping the FUN in fundamentals. Volleyball: Vibe Volleyball Lab has released its Summer Schedule which will run from July 8 through Aug. 29. Skill & Performance Labs are available for Beginners (2nd-5th graders), Middle School (6th-8th graders) and High School (9th-12th grade) students.
