Holiday shoppers at the South Bay Galleria Saturday afternoon were first startled, and then enchanted when 150 fellow shoppers suddenly began singing “O Holy Night.”

The singers in center court near the giant Christmas tree, and on the three levels overlooking center court, were members of Journey of Faith Church in Manhattan Beach.

As they sang, a young couple carrying a newborn child and dressed as Mary and Joseph, appeared among the singers.

The unannounced “flash mob” performance continued with “Go Tell it on the Mountain,” O Come All ye Faithful,” and other familiar Christmas songs.

In past years Journey of Faith has produced elaborate nativity plays at its church on Artesia Boulevard at Prospect Avenue in Manhattan Beach. This year, Pastor Mark Portis said, the church decided to take its Christmas performance to the public with a “flash mob,” an increasingly popular form of public performance art.

South Bay Galleria Marketing Director Mickie Marraffino said she hopes the holiday flash mob performance will become an annual event.
