Beach Cities Sports: Basketball, golf, swimming and more

Aquatics: Celebrate the end of summer and raise funds for the Challenged Athletes Foundation on Saturday, Sept. 19. Board Short Mile starts at 10 a.m., a one mile open water swim with start/finish line just south of Hermosa Pier. Arrive early to sign waiver and get your board shorts on. All participants issued identical board shorts to wear and keep. Silent auction items include a surfboard from ET Surf and other fine items. Golf: The King Harbor Golf Course Takeover will be held Sunday, Sept. 20 at The Lakes in El Segundo. Check in time is 10 a.m. Tee off at 11 a.m. Entry fee (foursome – $240, single – $70) includes 9 holes of golf, on course beer station, post golf beer garden, goodie bag and raffle prizes. Basketball: Online registration is open for the Hermosa Beach Youth Basketball’s (HBYB) winter season, open to boys and girls in Kindergarten through 8th grade. Games are indoor at the Hermosa Beach Community Center Gym and Hermosa Valley School Gym beginning Jan. 4, 2016. Try-outs are mandatory but everyone plays regardless of skill. Tryouts held Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 11-12 (visit hbyb.net for times and location). Fees are $160 (first player), $145 (second player), $130 (third player). Add $10 after Sept. 30. Walk-in sign-ups held Sept. 26-27 from 2-5:30 p.m. at the Hermosa Beach Community Center in Room 9. A limited number of partial or full scholarships are available. To register log onto hbyb.net. Football: El Camino College will be playing its home games this season at Redondo Union High School while construction of its new football stadium is completed. The Warriors will hold Saturday home games at 5 p.m. facing Saddleback (Sept. 19), Riverside (Oct. 3), Chaffey (Oct. 31) and Long Beach City (Nov. 14). Five former Redondo players will return to Sea Hawk Bowl including Stephon Suddoth (Running back), Colin Hindle (tight end), Alex Maimot (offensive lineman) and Nathan Hierlihy (kicker). Former Mira Costa Mustangs include running back Sebastian Franck-Love, Tre Searcy (running back), Michael Holliday (offensive lineman) and Casey Sublette (kicker).

 
Beach Volleyball: The California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA) will be holding tournaments on Saturday and Sunday, Sept 26-27 at Marine Street in Manhattan Beach. Saturday’s action features Men’s and Women’s AA tournaments. Sunday, Men’s B and Women’s A competitions. Entry fees are $45 per team. To register visit cbva.com.
