Lady Sea Hawks shutout rivals

Redondo’s girls soccer team defeated Mira Costa for the first time in six seasons, dropping the Mustangs into a second-place tie with the Sea Hawks behind Palos Verdes. Jazmin Ponce scored the lone goal of the match on a free kick in the 38th minute. It marked the first goal surrendered by Mira Costa in Bay League play this season.

Coach Patty Perkinson’s Mira Costa team must rebound from the upset loss after the team defeated Peninsula 1-0 Friday, marking the Mustang’s ninth shutout in its 11 wins. Morgan Hilby scored the lone goal against the Panthers. Mira Costa traveled to take on undefeated Palos Verdes Tuesday.

The Mustangs continue league action hosting Leuzinger tomorrow before playing at West Tuesday. Both matches are scheduled to 3 p.m. Mira Costa defeated Leuzinger 7-0 and West 2-0 in the first meeting of league play.

Redondo prepares for back-to-back 3 p.m. road matches with Palos Verdes tomorrow and Peninsula Tuesday.

Boys Basketball

Host Redondo jumped out to a 21-15 lead with 5:39 remaining in the first half, but couldn’t hold its lead against Leuzinger, who defeated the Sea Hawks 74-40 in a game that determined first place in the Bay League.

Jamar Cannon scored 11 points, including three 3-pointers, in the first quarter but Leuzinger held the high-scoring guard to four points the remainder of the contest to win its ninth game in a row and secure its No. 3 ranking in the CIF Southern Section Division 1A poll. Despite the loss, Redondo retained its No. 10 ranking in Division 2AA.

Brandon Boyd added eight points for the Sea Hawks who played at West Tuesday. Redondo hosts Palos Verdes tomorrow and Peninsula Tuesday in the second of two league contests. The Sea Hawks defeated Palos Verdes 60-42 in the league opener for both teams before being upset at Peninsula 67-59. Peninsula is ranked No. 8 in Division 2A.

Mira Costa, ranked No. 7 in Division 2A, moved into a second-place tie with Redondo, Peninsula and West with a thrilling 56-53 victory over Peninsula Friday.

Eric Mochalski nailed a 3-point shot with 12.8 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Mustangs to their second league victory.

Thomas Johnson, who tied the game with a free throw, led Mira Costa with 13 points, 11 rebounds and eights blocks while Mochalski finished with 12 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots.

Mira Costa begins the second round against Bay League opponents tomorrow when the Mustangs travel to Leuzinger before hosting West Tuesday. Both games start at 7:30 p.m. Mira Costa fell to Leuzinger 90-71 and beat West 56-53 in the first meeting between the schools.

Girls Basketball

Coach Don Braunecker’s Mira Costa squad beat Peninsula 63-40 last Friday before hosting Palos Verdes Tuesday in a battle between the two remaining undefeated teams in the Bay League. The Mustangs entered the game ranked No. 5 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1A poll and had outscored their opponents 1,007-885 this season. Palos Verdes holds the No. 2 slot in the Division 3A rankings.

Joelle Herron led Mira Costa to its victory over Peninsula with 16 points. Jordyn Priestley scored 15 points and Kylie Nakamine added eight points and six rebounds.

The Lady Mustangs travel to Leuzinger tomorrow and host West Tuesday. Both games tip off at 6 p.m.

Redondo topped Leuzinger 47-32 Friday to remain in the playoff hunt. Ella Mason had 14 points and seven rebounds for the Sea Hawks who begin the second round of league action hosting Palos Verdes tomorrow and Peninsula Tuesday.

Redondo looks to avenge a 52-38 league-opening loss to Palos Verdes. The Sea Hawks defeated Peninsula 37-32 in the first meeting between the schools.

Boys Soccer

Mira Costa remains in the race for the Bay League title after shutting out visiting Peninsula 3-0 Friday and Redondo 1-0 Monday. Joe Valenzuula scored the game’s only goal in the 17th minute to lead the Mustangs past rival Redondo and Indheca Wycoff scored two goals and Chijioke Aranotu added one in the Mustangs win over Peninsula. Mira Costa is ranked No. 7 in the CIF Southern Section Division poll.

Mira Costa plays at Leuzinger tomorrow to open the second round of Bay League competition. The Mustangs look to avenge their only loss of the season when they host West Tuesday in a 3 p.m. match. West squeaked out a 2-1 victory over Mira Costa January 15 and is ranked No. 4 in Division 1.

Despite Alex Matei’s two goals, Redondo dropped to 1-2 in the Bay League after losing to Leuzinger 4-2 Friday. The Sea Hawks host Palos Verdes tomorrow and travel to Peninsula Tuesday for 3 p.m. matches.

Girls Water Polo

After defeating Newport Harbor (No. 2 in Division 1) for the first time, Palos Verdes refused to let what many consider the biggest win in the program’s history interfere with the team’s focus as the Sea Kings defeated Mira Costa 11-6 Tuesday.

Palos Verdes (16-5, 4-0) remained atop the Division 2 rankings while handing Mira Costa (6-6, 3-1) its first loss in Bay League action.

Laura Milstead led the Mustangs with three goals while Marissa Purcell added two scores and Summer Flanders had one.

Redondo comes to the Mustang’s campus tomorrow for a noon contest to make up a postponed game and returns Wednesday for a 3 p.m. showdown between the rival schools. Sandwiched in between is Mira Costa’s 3 p.m. Monday match with visiting Peninsula.

Redondo won its first league match last Friday with a 15-2 victory over West. Julia Uriarte scored five goals and Tiifany Morales added four tallies for the Sea Hawks.

Uriarte continued her scoring streak with five goals Monday in leading Redondo (8-9, 2-1) to a 12-10 win at Peninsula. Jaycee Baldus added four goals for the Sea Hawks who played at Palos Verdes yesterday.

Wrestling

Mira Costa and Redondo dropped their second league matches. The Mustangs (1-1) fell to defending Bay League champion West 66-12. Justin Tam (152) and Alan Hoa (130) had pins for Mira Costa.

The Mustangs host Peninsula today at 3 p.m.

Redondo (0-2) was defeated by Peninsula 57-18. Devan Robinson (125) and Blake Harris (160) had pins for the Sea Hawks who host West today at 5 p.m. The Warriors are ranked No. 5 in CIF Division 5. ER
