Groms from the Malibu Heaven and Surf Club could be forgiven for wondering if they made a mistake coming to El Porto on Saturday, Feb. 12 for the South Bay Board Riders/El Porto Surf contest. Unlike Malibu’s rights, which break with the predictability of a wave machine, El Porto’s head high surf was exploding in all directions. But following the lead of the local groms, the Malibu groms quickly figured out that if they guessed right on the take off, chances were good the wave would reform on the inside, allowing them rides as long as Malibu’s, without the crowd.

Head high sets, offshore winds, and 75 degree air throughout the day extended the SBBC’s luck in scheduling contests during good conditions.
