Thousands of athletes of different ages and skill levels will compete in the Beach Cities this weekend beginning with one of the most popular running races in the South Bay – the Manhattan Beach 10K

Founded in 1978 by a group of local runner wanting to have an “in town” race, the Manhattan Beach 10K is a true community event.

Organizers believe it is the only running race in the top 100 in the nation that does not have a corporate sponsor. With the help of volunteers, proceeds are returned to the community in the form of scholarships to high school seniors living in Manhattan Beach and to various enhancements to the recreation facilities of local schools and parks.

More than 3,700 participants competed in last year’s race which was won by Gardena’s Tito Lezama who completed the course with a time of 31 minutes, six seconds.

Redondo Beach’s Nathalie Higley was the first woman across the finish line with a mark of 36:08, good enough for 13th overall.

In store registration is open until Friday at 7 p.m. or the event sells out (whichever occurs first) at Village Runner, 1840 N Sepulveda Blvd in Manhattan Beach.

On Sunday, Hermosa Beach hosts the Day at the Beach Triathlon.

Considered a safe, beginner-oriented course, the triathlon begins at 7 a.m. with a 1/4-mile swim (wetsuits are recommended) south of the Hermosa Beach Pier.

A 10 mile bike course follows beginning by a small climb up Pier Ave. and heading up Valley Drive toward Manhattan Beach.

Brian Tasker, of Redondo Beach, is the defending champion defeating the competition in 2012 with a time of 53 minutes, one second. Mission Viejo’s Amanda Nauman won the women’s division at 54:48 while finishing fourth overall.

Entry fees are $115 for an individual, $185 for relay teams. To register, log on to mesp.com. For more information, visit dayatthebeachtri.com.
