Mira Costa opens football season with romp over Torrance

Mira Costa’s offense proved its spread offense can put points on the board, scoring on its first four possessions in a 55-14 rout of visiting Torrance. in the season-opener for both teams.

New offensive coordinator Matt Baker’s offense was well balanced as quarterback David Arredondo led the Mustang attack in his first varsity start.

The junior was a perfect 7 for 7 passing for 138 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for 40 yards and one touchdown.

While Mira Costa’s defense was holding Torrance to 16 total yards in the first half, the Mustang offense built a 28-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back.

Ta’utino Sione began the onslaught scoring on a 27-yard screen pass. Omar Morrison scored two of his three touchdowns and Chris Brown added another.

Morrison scored again in the second quarter before Arredondo’s 5-yard touchdown run put the Mustang up 41-0 at halftime.

Torrance got on the scoreboard when quarterback Ryan Carroll scored on a 4-yard run but Mira Costa responded with a 9-yard touchdown by Kevin Russell and a 16-yard touchdown run by Spencer Gilbert.

Mira Costa will have a tougher test in its second game when the Mustangs travel to take on La Serna in a rare Thursday night game slated to kickoff at 7 p.m. at Pioneer High School.

La Serna (2-0) is ranked No. 5 in the Southeast Division. The Lancers opened with a 14-13 win at Eastlake (Chula Vista) and held off Lakewood 21-19 last Thursday.

La Serna quarterback Jon Ceballos threw for 213 yards and two touchdowns and Anthony Garcia had 145 all-purpose yards against Lakewood.
