Mira Costa, Peninsula advance in girls water polo playoffs
Third-seeded Peninsula and fourth-seeded Mira Costa scored impressive victories in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoff on Wednesday.
Bay League championship Peninsula (19-6) defeated Righetti 10-2 and will play at No. 6 Troy (23-7) in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Holding a slim 4-2 lead at halftime, Mira Costa (14-9) exploded in the second half to eliminate Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks 11-2 in its first-round contest.
Chloe Le and Isabella Magno each recorded three goals and five steals to lead the Mustangs. Aminadi Anorve-Saetth scored two goals and Kelly Giery added one goal and five assists in the win.
The Mustangs host No. 5 Santiago/Corona (19-6) Saturday at 5 p.m. Semifinals (Wednesday, Feb. 25) and Finals (Saturday, Feb. 28) will be held at William Woollett Jr. Aquatic Center in Irvine.
After defeating Sunny Hills 13-7 in a wild-card game, No. 8 Palos Verdes (10-18) lost at No. 10 La Serna 11-10 in the first round.
In Division 6, Ocean League runner-up El Segundo (15-13) lost at No. 3 Segerstrom (21-3) 14-2 on Thursday.
Chadwick (11-10) dropped its wild-cad game at Morro Bay 10-9).
