Andrea Lee’s return to the Mira Costa girls golf team was a big boost this season, but winning the CIF title came down to the team’s sixth golfer.

Lexi Nelson’s 14-over-par 88 was a better score than Diamond Bar’s sixth golfer giving Mira Costa the CIF Southern Section Central Division Team Championship after the Mustangs had tied the three-time defending champions 395-395 at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills.

Lee led Mira Costa shooting a 4-under-par 70 while Marni Murez (76), Ashley Kim (78), Danielle Richman (85) and Veronica Chen (86) aided the cause.

Lee, a senior, won the CIF State Individual Championship as a sophomore before skipping the high school season last year to concentrate on other tournaments. She was named the American Junior Golf Association’s 2014 Rolex Junior Player of the Year.

“I decided to return to Mira Costa’s golf team because I thought it would be great chance to win the state title as a team, but also to try and defend it individually as well,” Lee said. “We have some really great players on the team and have a good shot at winning State. I’m confident with where my game is right now so hopefully I’ll be able to win State individually as well.”

Mira Costa advances to the CIF-SS/WSCGA Team Qualifiers on Thursday, Nov. 5 at Western Hills Golf Club in Chino Hills.

The top four teams qualify for the CIF-WSCGA Foundation Southern California Girls’ Golf Championship on Thursday, Nov. 12, at Goose Creek in Mira Loma.
