
Mira Costa retained its No. 2 ranking while remaining undefeated after the second day of action in the Interscholastic Beach Volleyball League (IBVL) played Saturday at Dockweiler State Beach.
The Mustangs’ top team of Skylar Caputo and Keala Rusher, who filled in for Lan Nguyen, defeated Thousand Oaks 21-15, 21-18 and Foothill 21-13, 21-11 leading Mira Costa to sweeps over both schools.
Mira Costa’s No. 2 team of Katrina Kernochan and Samantha Snyder dominated their matches winning by scores of 21-8, 21-7 and 21-4, 21-8.
Lindsay Chalmers and Chloe Markland also had impressive victories beating Thousand Oaks 21-15, 21-9 and Foothill 21-10, 21-4.
Valencia (4-0) is ranked No. 1, followed by the Mustangs (4-0), Huntington Beach (4-0) and San Marcos (4-0).
Redondo is ranked fifth in the 30-team league. The Sea Hawks have a 2-2 record after dropping matches to Huntington Beach and San Marcos on Saturday.
Abril Bustamante and Andrea Gonzalez lost hard-fought battles with the top teams from Huntington Beach 28-26, 21-18 and San Marcos 21-15, 9-21, 15-11.
Redondo’s second team of Dominique Dodd and Brittany Ungermann fell to Huntington Beach 24-22, 21-13. Katie Barkley and Pearl Mazza prevented the sweep with a 21-4, 21-9 rout in the No. 3 match.
Barkley/Mazza competed as Redondo’s No. 2 team against San Marcos, giving the Knights all they could handle in a 21-15, 19-21, 15-10 loss. Then it was Dodd and Ungermann’s turn to prevent a sweep scoring a 21-15, 21-17 victory.
The IBVL is operated by the Southern Pacific Volleyball Committee and sanctioned by the Amateur Athletic Union of the United States, Inc. in cooperation with the County of Los Angeles, Department of Beaches & Harbors. The next day of competition is Saturday, April 13 at Dockweiler.
Mira Costa will face the West Torrance JV team (0-4) at 10 a.m. followed by matches against West Torrance’s varsity squads (1-3) at 12 p.m.
Redondo opens against Winward (3-1) at 10 a.m. before playing the West Torrance JV team at 1 p.m.
