City officials joined state and federal transportation representatives Tuesday to celebrate the opening of the new, 19-years-in-the-planning Redondo Beach Transit Center.

Replacing the existing facility at the Galleria, the new transit hub is an 11-bay, multi-modal stop for Beach Cities Transit, GTrans, Lawndale Beat, Los Angeles Metro and Torrance Transit. It has 320 parking spaces.

Strategic planning began for the center in 2000. In 2007, the city council and planning commission approved planning, design and preliminary funding.

The journey to the construction phase included two redesigns in 2009. In 2018, the Redondo Beach city council turned down four bids to build the center because the costs were too high. The city then looked for more funding.

Construction started in 2020 on the $15 million project, funded by federal, South Bay Regional and City of Redondo Beach funds (Proposition C, Measure R, Measure M).

Those in attendance Feb. 7 at Kingsdale Avenue, next to South Bay Galleria, included Charlene Lee Lorenzo, Region Nine director for the Federal Transit Administration; Ray Sosa, deputy chief planning & development officer, Los Angeles Metro; and John Cruikshank, board chair for South Bay Cities Council of Governments. Also on hand were representatives from State Senator Ben Allen’s, and Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi’s office. ER
