Sniffing out suspects was nine year-old Andy’s greatest duty. A keen sense of smell and a friendly personality were Andy’s greatest assets. Unfortunately, after battling cancer for a year, last Sunday was his final day and he spent it with his greatest friends, retired Officer Rich Sigler and his family.
“He was a high-drive dog who was very loved by everyone,” said Sigler. “I loved him as a partner but my wife just loved him.”

Andy and Sigler worked together for four years at the Redondo Beach Police Department as partners. However, Andy was hairier and more slobbery than most officers because he was a German Shepard.
Andy was born in Czechoslovakia on September 11, 2002. He was appointed to the RBPD’s Canine unit in January of 2004 and served as a valuable member through December 2008 when he retired alongside Sigler. Andy was a patrol canine that was responsible for apprehending numerous criminal suspects throughout the South Bay.
“He was a pretty friendly dog… and was very friendly with the public,” said Sergeant Dave Christian of the RBPD. “Everyone was sad to hear of his passing, it’s always sad when we lose one of our canines – they become a part of the police department family.”
Andy was used throughout the community to help with awareness programs because of his personality. He was also used to search for and apprehend suspects.
“Andy was often seen making special appearances at various community functions,” according to a press release from the RBPD. “Not only was Andy an incredibly skilled working canine, he was a good friend to the community.”
To donate to the Canine Team in honor of Andy, donations should be forwarded to the Redondo Beach Police Canine Donation fund, in care of Lieutenant Todd Heywood, Redondo Beach Police Department, 401 Diamond St., Redondo Beach, CA 90277.
