Sewing Rebellion at the libraries

The Redondo Beach Public Library is fomenting fabric-based rebellion at its two libraries this month, beginning with an introduction to the sewing machine this Saturday, July 13.

Participants will learn a brief history of the sewing machine, as well as about the machine itself. They will then learn how to thread, wind a bobbin, oil, maintain and care for their own machines, and then do a simple mend kit sewing project.

July 20 will see participants learn about the T-shirt supply chain, and learn how to transform “gently-used” T-shirts into backpacks, shopping bags or aprons.

July 27 will teach participants piece work and machine quilting techniques, to produce a 2D or 3D pot holder, or a narrative quilt square.

All of the events will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Redondo Beach Main Library, and from 2 to 5 p.m. at the North Library.

Each event asks that participants bring at least sewing machines, fabric scissors, pins, thread, bobbins and measure tape or rulers.

The Sewing Rebellion series is led by Frau Fiber, a “textile superhero” that urges participants to stop shopping and start sewing, while distributing knowledge of the garment industry, pattern-making, and sewing. The program encourages participants to reuse, renovate and recycle existing garments and textiles into unique items tailored to their own tastes and body shapes.

On top of the Sewing Rebellion Series, the Redondo Beach Public Library also gives cardholders access to Creativebug, a website that offers thousands of video classes on painting, knitting, sewing and crafting, with step-by-step instruction and downloadable instructions.

Surf, Eat, Read with Jim Kempton

California Surf Museum president Jim Kempton is sharing his latest book, “First We Surf, Then We Eat: Recipes from a Lifetime of Surf Travel” on Tuesday, July 16 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Redondo Beach Main Library’s Second Floor Meeting Room.

A lifelong surfer, cook, and writer, Kempton learned how to cook the best beach-loving dishes, and wrote his book to share those, along with his stories of waves, restaurants, and adventures.

Copies of the book will be available for purchase. For more information, visit redondo.org/library.
