Redondo girls volleyball team impressive in first-round playoff win

Following a week with no matches, Redondo quickly shook the rust off sweeping Westlake in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

After dropping its season-opening match, Westlake entered the postseason with 33 straight wins but second seeded Redondo (33-2) easily eliminated the visiting Warriors 25-21, 25-13, 25-16.

Redondo will host South Coast League champion San Juan Hills (17-7) Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The first match against Westlake was touch-and-go until Jasmine Davis served back-to-back aces to give the Sea Hawks a 15-13 lead and one they would not relinquish the rest of the night.

Davis led Redondo with 10 kills while Laila Ricks and Kami Miner recorded nine and eight, respectively.

San Juan Hills defeated Vista Murrieta 3-1 in its opening-round match.

While Redondo was enjoying its victory, Bay League runner-up Mira Costa saw its season come to a close with a 25-20, 25-20, 25-23 lost at Long Beach Poly.

Memphis Glasgow led the Mustangs with nine kills and Malia Yuhi contributed two aces in the loss.

Poly advances to take on Mater Dei, the No. 1 team in the state.

In Division 2, the Bay League’s third team Palos Verdes (20-11) eliminated host Los Osos 3-0 and will travel to face second-seeded Corona del Mar (24-11), who had a first-round bye, in the second round at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

In Division 3, South Torrance (21-14) swept visiting Louisville behind the strong play of Lauren Walsh and Kaeli Barankiewcz who tallied 17 kills and 15 digs between them.

The Spartans will play at Glendora (23-4) in a 5 p.m. contest on Saturday.

In Division 4, Bishop Montgomery (19-12) swept Gahr and will host Mayfair (18-13) in the second round on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Lauren Turner led the Knights with 17 kills. Madeline Cardenas and Takenya Stafford each recorded 10 kills in the win.

Torrance (19-12) also advances with a 3-2 victory over visiting Royal. The Tartars will play at Alta Loma (26-8) in the second round.

Eliminated were Chadwick, who was swept by San Marino, and El Segundo, a 3-0 loser to Poly/Pasadena.

In Division 5, Vistamar (25-0) defeated visiting Pioneer and will play at Woodcrest Christian (19-8) in the second round.

In Division 7, Rolling Hills Prep and Mary Star of the Sea advanced to the second round. Rolling Hills Prep (16-2) will travel to face Northview (16-16) while Mary Star (18-8) will host Cate (14-4) Saturday at 6 p.m.
