
Redondo fans celebrated in their home gym Tuesday evening when they witnessed an event that hadn’t happened since 2007 — both boys and girls basketball teams swept rival Mira Costa in Bay League competition.
Not since the days of Atonye Nyingifa, Renahy Young and Courtney Price had the Lady Sea Hawks defeated the Mustangs twice in the same season and with Tuesday’s 55-42 victory, Redondo (17-8, 7-0) remained undefeated in the league race, increasing its lead to two games with three to play.
Mira Costa (15-9, 5-2) had trouble overcoming Redondo’s depth, balance and stifling defense while Ashiana Antar recorded a game-high 13 points, Michelle Lowery had eight points and nine rebounds and Allie Goldberg added eight points to pace the surging Sea Hawks.
A key for Redondo was limiting Mira Costa team leader Kylie Nakamine to six points.
“Defense is our number one strength,” Redondo coach Marcelo Enriquez said.

 Joelle Herron led Mira Costa with 12 points and Camille Mills contributed nine second-half points for the Mustangs who were coming off a 57-44 victory over West that moved the Mustangs into the CIF Division 1AA rankings for the first time this season at the 16th position. Nakamine scored 18 of her 20 points from the charity stripe and Herron added 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Mustangs. Ashley Reese also scored 10 points and Jenna Stephanoff had seven points and 10 rebounds in the win.
The final week of the season will have Mira Costa playing at Leuzinger on Friday, at home Tuesday against Peninsula and hosting Palos Verdes on Thursday, Feb. 10. All games begin at 6 p.m.
With its win over Mira Costa, Redondo increase its winning streak to eight games and is tied for 11th in the CIF Division 1AA poll.
In the midst of its run for Bay League title, Redondo helped prepare itself for a deep run in the playoffs with a tough non-league game at Bishop Amat last Saturday.

Lowery scored eight points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Sea Hawks to a 40-37 victory over the second-ranked team in CIF Division 3A. The win came a day after Redondo dismantled Peninsula 52-26.
In the final week of Bay League competition, Redondo plays at West on Friday and at Palos Verdes on Tuesday before hosting Leuzinger on Thursday, Feb. 10. All games start at 6 p.m.Â
Boys Basketball
Redondo held off a Mira Costa rally to defeat its rival 50-48 Tuesday behind strong offensive performances by Jacquise Bates and Martyre Demarco, who combined for 28 points.
Mira Costa was led by Thomas Johnson and Elliott Ozer, who scored 15 and 14 points, respectively.
The win moved Redondo (11-11, 3-4) into a third-place tie with Mira Costa (10-13, 3-4) and West (12-11, 3-4). The Warriors were upset by Palos Verdes 62-59 on Tuesday.
Peninsula (22-1, 7-0) secured at least a share of the Bay League title with an 88-84 overtime victory over second-place Leuzinger (15-8, 4-3).

Last Friday, Redondo fell just short of handing Peninsula its first league loss of the season. Trailing 50-47 with 11 second remaining in regulation, the Sea Hawks could not manage to get a 3-point shot and were forced to settle for two points. Peninsula kept Redondo from having another possession and ran its winning streak to 19 games.
Redondo’s Martyre Demarco scored 18 points and Derek Biale added 10 against Peninsula, the top-ranked team in CIF Division 2A.
After a league game at West on Friday, Redondo will play a non-league contest at Bishop Montgomery (No. 10, Div. 3AA) at 7 p.m. on Saturday. The Sea Hawks conclude the regular season at Palos Verdes on Tuesday and at home against Leuzinger on Thursday, Feb. 10. League games begin at 7:30 p.m.
Mira Costa entered the Redondo game after suffering a heartbreaking 53-49 loss to West. Ozer hit a 3-point buzzer-beater to send the game into overtime but Mira Costa was unable to capitalize on the momentum. Ozer finished with 17 points and seven rebounds while Johnson had 11 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots.
The Mustangs play at Leuzinger on Friday, at home Tuesday against Peninsula and host Palos Verdes on Thursday, Feb. 10 to wrap up the Bay League season. All games begin at 7:30 p.m.
Boys Soccer
After Indheca Wycoff put Mira Costa ahead 1-0, Redondo’s goal in the 70th minute evened the score in a game played at Redondo Tuesday. The tie dropped Mira Costa’s record to 10-3-4, 3-2-2. Redondo is 2-3-2 in Bay League play.

After ending Palos Verdes’ 13-game winning streak with a 1-0 road victory last week, Mira Costa fell to West 1-0 on Friday but hope to turn things around in the final week of the regular season.

Girls Soccer
Mira Costa (10-4-3, 3-3-1) dropped its third straight match Tuesday with a 3-1 loss to visiting Redondo. Shannon Simon scored two goals and Samantha Witteman added one for the Sea Hawks (8-8-3, 2-4-1).
The Mustangs, who fell to West 1-0 last Friday, complete Bay League play hosting Leuzinger Friday before traveling to Peninsula on Tuesday and Palos Verdes, the top-ranked team in the CIF Division 2 poll, on Thursday, Feb. 10. All games are scheduled for 3 p.m. starts.
Redondo entered Tuesday’s game after a 3-1 loss to Peninsula last Friday. Witteman scored the lone goal and Erinn Middo recorded five saves for the Sea Hawks.
Redondo concludes its season hosting West on Friday and Palos Verdes on Tuesday then traveling to Leuzinger Thursday, Feb. 10. All games are slated to start at 3 p.m.
Girls Water Polo
Mira Costa jumped ahead of Palos Verdes in the race for the Bay League title on Monday with an 8-4 victory over the visiting Sea Kings.
Goalkeeper Bianca Magno recorded 11 saves and Marisa Purcell scored a game-high three goals to pace the Mira Costa (16-6, 5-1) who handed Palos Verdes (12-11, 4-1) its first league loss since 2007.
Emily Milstead scored the first two goals and Jackie Rojas the first of her two goals to give the Mustangs a 3-0 lead. Sara Crist also scored for Mira Costa which held onto a 5-1 first-quarter lead.
The Mustangs played at Peninsula Wednesday and will compete in the 32-team So Cal Championships in Orange County held Thursday through Saturday. The championship is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday at William Woolett, Jt. Aquatics Center in Irvine.
Mira Costa concludes Bay League action Wednesday hosting Redondo at 3 p.m. The Sea Hawks play at Palos Verdes Monday in a 3 p.m. contest.
Wrestling
Redondo won its first Bay League dual meet in four years with a 45-36 win over rival Mira Costa on Monday but the victory was bittersweet when the Sea Hawks lost two of its wrestlers for the remainder of the season due to injuries.
Kevin James (135) dislocated an elbow and Damon Guerrero (171) suffered a broken jaw forcing them to default their matches. Redondo rebounded, however, with a heavyweight win by Alex Maldanado.
In the Sam DeJohn Invitational held January 22, Mira Costa wrestlers Weston Carico finished 4th in the 145-pound class and Ian Goodbody placed 4th in the 160-pound division.
The Bay League finals will be held Saturday at West beginning at 1 p.m.
West captured its third consecutive Bay League Dual Meet championship with a 43-9 victory over Peninsula. ER
