Redondo Union rallies to beat San Pedro for fourth football victory of the season

Another question was answered for Redondo Union head football coach Matt Ballard Friday. One week after his Sea Hawk squad proved it could win on the road against a formidable opponent, Redondo showed it can pull off a come-from-behind victory.
Trailing 17-7 at halftime, Redondo rallied to defeat visiting San Pedro 25-24 behind the arm and legs of quarterback Harrison Faecher.
“It was a great ‘character inventory’ game for our boys,” Ballard said. “Credit goes to San Pedro for being physical and really putting it to us from the start. As happy as we are about the win, it is the way our team didn’t give up on each other, even when it could have been easy down 24-9, but instead showed great resilience and faith in each other by fighting on and turning things around.”
The comeback began when Zane Zent recovered an onside kick to begin the second half which seemed to spark the Sea Hawks.
Redondo lineman Cedric Muzik caused a safety when San Pedro’s quarterback was called for intentionally grounding while in the end zone.
San Pedro scored again quickly on a 31-pass play to give the Pirates a 24-9 lead with just over seven minutes left in the third quarter.
As the final seconds ticked off the clock ending the third quarter, a 25-yard field goal by Colin Castillo trimmed Redondo’s deficit to 24-12.
After a fumble recovery by Redondo’s Alex Maimot, Faecher scampered 15 yards for a touchdown to pull the Sea Hawks to within five points.
On Redondo’s next possession, Faecher kept the drive alive picking up a first down on fourth-and 1 with a quarterback sneak. He later ran 25 yards for a score to give the Sea Hawks their first lead of the game with 3:46 left.
A 2-point conversion failed, leaving San Pedro with an opportunity to win the game with a field goal. The Pirates reached midfield but a Salesi Fifita interception on fourth-and-10 sealed the win for the home team.
Faecher ran for a team-leading 81 yards and three touchdowns on nine carries and was 28 for 38 for 237 yards passing.
The win improved Redondo’s record to 4-1 while the loss was the first of the season for San Pedro (3-1). Redondo has a bye next week before hosting Peninsula in its Bay League opener and Homecoming Game on Friday, Oct. 11.
Faecher was the obvious pick for the Sea Hawk’s Offensive Player of the Game and Jamaal Perkins earned Defensive Player of the Game. Special Teams Player of the Game went Zent and recognized as the Scout/Practice Player of the Week was junior wide receiver DeAaron Williams.
