Northwest swell promised for weekend

Thursday morning will see a temporary dip in size for the morning session, but there should still be plenty of fun surf for the top spots. The better West facing beaches should go waist to chest high and some fresh NW ground swell will fill in through the day.

The conditions should be excellent with morning with offshore winds out of the NE/NNE at 9-12 m.p.h. (stronger below the passes and canyons), until around 1p.m. and mild winds in the afternoon. We’ll see a high air temp of 72 degrees.

By Friday morning, the surf should pick up again with some fresh NW energy and nice little pop of long interval SW swell, from a liberal 210-220 degree angle. The best West facing breaks should go shoulder to head high plus and the South facing beaches should see at least waist high plus sets, (possibly larger at the standouts). The beach breaks that pick up the combination should have some nice peaks.

The conditions should be fantastic again, with morning offshore winds out of the NE/NNE at 6-10 m.p.h. until around 1 p.m. and West winds to 8 m.p.h. in the afternoon. We’ll see a high air temp of 69 degrees.

Saturday morning will be a little bit smaller, but both swells will stick around for what should be, another fun morning of waves. I’m anticipating just a smaller, less consistent version of Friday.

The conditions won’t change much, with morning offshore winds out of the NNE at 2-10 m.p.h. until around 1 p.m. and afternoon onshore’s out of the West at 8-10 m.p.h. We’ll see a high air temp of 71 degrees.

By Sunday morning, the surf will be even smaller, but there should be a few straggler sets left for the weekend warriors. The best spots should offer up a few waist high plus sets. The offshore flow will have folded the tent and left town, so the winds and weather won’t be as nice as earlier in the week, but overall, it still should be an okay morning.

The conditions will be okay with light and variable winds at 1-4 until noon and West winds up to 8 m.p.h. in the afternoon. We’ll see partly cloudy skies and a high air temp of 64 degrees.

The current water temps are as follows: south Bay 58 degrees, Newport 56, Huntington 57, Santa Monica 57 and Malibu 55 degrees.
