It was years in the making, but this summer will be the first in which Hermosa Beach will have a large park available at both ends of town.
The South Park Universally Accessible and Natural Playground reopened in January to widespread approval in the local community. Residents, city officials and even a monk from the neighboring Buddhist center christened its opening by sliding down one of the stone slides built into a hill at the park’s northwest corner. Like much of the park, the slide was designed to complement and preserve, rather than change, the surrounding environment. The park is also notable for being among few in Southern California that is designed to be used by children of all ages, including those with disabilities.
In addition to the newly installed play spaces and equipment, the park is home to a community garden, which opened in March. Plots tended and shared by residents should be producing organic produce by the time the summer season is in full swing.
