Burglar caught
A man who appeared to be burglarizing a home was arrested by Manhattan Beach Police on the afternoon of June 18.
The police responded to a burglar alarm that went off on the 100 block of Terraza Place in South Manhattan Beach around 3:50 p.m. and found a broken window.
While waiting for backup, police watched the man, identified as Kelvin Melgar, 21, of Compton, climb out of a window. When he saw the officers, he went back inside the home, which is located at the end of a long dead-end street.
When the other officers arrived, they entered the house and arrested the man.
Police said the case is under investigation.
Phone stolen
An unknown suspect stole an iPhone from a park bench near the pond on the 1600 block of Manhattan Beach Boulevard on June 13 at 2 p.m.
Bike and lock
Unknown suspect(s) stole a bicycle from the rack on the north side of the pier between midnight and 1 a.m. on May 31. The bicycle was secured to the rack with a U-lock which was also stolen.
Vehicle thefts
On June 9, an unknown suspect punched the driver’s front door lock of a vehicle and stole multiple items on the 2700 block of North Sepulveda some time between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. A suspect can be seen on video surveillance approaching the vehicle after it was parked by the victim, but no identifying features of the suspect can be seen.On June 14 or 15, a red 2013 Toyota Rav4 was stolen from the victim’s driveway on the 900 block of 10th Street.
Residential burglaries
On June 9, an unknown suspect(s) forced open a locked kitchen door on the 1300 block of 13th Street and ransacked the residence, taking jewelry.
On June 10 or 11, an unknown suspect(s) entered a house on the 400 block of Harkness Avenue through an unlocked window and stole a desktop computer.
Construction crimes
Construction tools were stolen from a locked residential construction site on the 1100 block of 6th Street after a suspect pushed open a chain link fence on June 11 or June 12.
On one of those same days on the same block, more tools were stolen from another locked residential construction site. The thief pushed open the chain link fence and then climbed up scaffolding to open an unlocked sliding glass door on the second story.
Car break-ins
An iPod and bank cards were stolen from an unlocked vehicle parked in front of a residence on the 300 block of 36th Street some time between 10 p.m. on June 12 and 8 a.m. on June 13.
Gift cards and equipment were taken from a vehicle on the 3600 block of Crest Drive some time between 8:45 p.m. on June 12 and 7:30 a.m. on June 13. Method of entry was unknown.
During the same period, sporting equipment was taken from two vehicles on the 3500 block of Crest Drive. The equipment was later recovered in a neighbor’s yard. ER
