High winds tore through Hermosa Beach Sunday afternoon, nearly lifting the roof off a downtown restaurant.

Winds gusting in excess of 40 mph destabilized the roof on the upstairs patio at Hennessey’s Tavern on the southwest edge of Pier Plaza, said Captain James Crawford of the Hermosa Beach Fire Department.

“It had come loose and was flapping in the wind,” Crawford said.

Firefighters latched it down for the day, and a contractor was expected to more permanently secure the roof this week.

Elsewhere on the pier, the high winds made for jumbled windswell and forced the closure of the pier to pedestrians.

The inclement weather made traffic sparse on Pier Plaza. Typical Sunday afternoon crowds were absent from patios at Plaza restaurants. A waiter at one restaurant said that the restaurants typically close their patios whenever winds kick up due to the danger posed by falling fronds from palm trees overhead.

Street closures

Continuing street-improvement work in North Hermosa will result in traffic delays and periodic loss of parking in the area.

On Thursday, crews will be working on half of 25th Street between Ardmore Avenue and the street’s dead-end. On Monday, they will work on the other half.

From Feb. 10-12, crews will be working on Ardmore Avenue between Gould and Pier avenues.  Work will include street grinding, electrical work and repaving.
