Skate for Schools
SK8 for the Schools takes place next Wednesday afternoon at the Hermosa Skate Park. Organized by Hermosa youth Julian and Sebastian “Seabass” Kuhr, the event has raised more than $50,000 for the Hermosa Beach City School District in the 11 years it has run.
This year, the Kurhs have set a goal of 100 circuits around the skate park, landing at least 20 180s, 20 heel flips, 20 fakey spins, 20 rail slides, and 25 ollies over the park’s high bank. The event will also feature a demonstration of 50-50 grinds and other tricks. Participants are encouraged to wear pink to raise awareness of breast cancer.
Those wishing to donate can bring checks payable to the Hermosa Valley PTO. Additionally, because Seabass will be heading off to college next year, the Kuhrs are looking for another family to take over the event in the coming years. Those interested should contact Samantha Kuhr at samantha.kuhr@gmail.com
Walk for Water
The ninth annual Hermosa Beach Walk for Water will kick off on Pier Plaza Sunday morning. Walkers will meet in front of American Junkie at 8 a.m. to collect their race T-shirts, make signs, and get some “pre-race inspiration,” said Victoria Pacos, a member of the Samburu Project, the Los Angeles-based nonprofit that is organizing the event. From there, participants will walk to the Manhattan Pier and then return. (Dogs and joggers are welcome.) A pancake breakfast, live music and raffle will follow the end of the walk.
The Samburu Project organizes walks all over the country and raises money to aid the millions of people throughout the world who lack regular access to clean water. It takes its name from the Samburu people in Northern Kenya, where the project recently finished drilling 100 wells. For more information, go to TheSamburuProject.org/walkforwater/registration/
Aviation Corridor
Hermosa will host the last of three meetings devoted to coming improvements on the Aviation Corridor. The discussion is the result of a partnership among Hermosa, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, the Southern California Association of Governments, and CalTrans. Monday evening’s gathering will review “promising concepts” that have been previously developed. Along with examining possible changes along Aviation, the partnership is intended to produce a Living Streets Design Manual that will guide future development on other streets. The meeting takes place at the Hermosa Beach Community Center from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
